Short answer: Shubman Gill captains India in the first three ODIs in New Zealand, on 4, 7 and 10 November 2026. Shreyas Iyer captains the 4th and 5th ODIs on 13 and 15 November. The BCCI named two separate ODI squads on 16 October and gave no official reason; reports say Gill steps away to prepare for the two Tests, where he is captain again from 19 November.

Why Is Gill Not Playing the Last Two ODIs?
There is no BCCI statement explaining the split. The Free Press Journal reports that Gill will miss the final two games to focus on the Test series, and myKhel links the arrangement mainly to the two Tests that follow. Cricket Times describes it as workload management while India plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
One detail in the squad lists fits that reading: the four players who leave after the 3rd ODI, Gill, KL Rahul, Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna, are all in the Test squad. The 1st Test starts in Wellington on 19 November, four days after the last ODI. Until the BCCI says more, treat the reason as reported, not confirmed.
