How the Innings Unfolded
Gill had flown back from New Zealand, where he was playing for India A, less than a day before the match. He opened the batting with Jiwanjot Singh on the second morning after Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 215, and finished the day on 199. He reached his double hundred early on day three, added 69 more in the morning session, and was out with Punjab on 469. Tamil Nadu batted out the rest of the game to save a draw.
At the time it was the highest score of the 2018-19 Ranji season. Gill told The Indian Express (via the ICC) that a big innings "was due" and that he was not thinking about a triple hundred, just playing each ball on its merit.
